About Governors' Camp

A legendary camp on the banks of the Mara River, offering classic safari charm and unrivalled wildlife access in the heart of the Masai Mara.

Governors' Camp holds a distinguished place in safari history, having been established in 1972 in a location once reserved exclusively for Kenya's colonial governors. Nestled in a riverine forest along the winding banks of the Mara River, the camp occupies one of the most coveted sites within the Masai Mara National Reserve. Its setting provides an immersive experience where the sights and sounds of the wild are a constant, gentle companion. The camp maintains the character of a traditional safari, prioritizing an authentic connection to the wilderness while ensuring guest comfort and attentive service. The area surrounding Governors' Camp is renowned for its extraordinary concentration of wildlife. It was the long-time territory of the famous Marsh Pride of lions, documented for decades by filmmakers and photographers. Guests can expect frequent sightings of elephants, hippos wallowing in the river, buffalo, giraffes, and a host of antelope species. From approximately July to October, the camp offers a prime vantage point for the Great Migration, as vast herds of wildebeest and zebra thunder across the savanna. The diverse landscape, from the lush riverbanks to the expansive grasslands, supports a rich and dynamic ecosystem year-round. Daily activities are centered on exploring this remarkable environment. Expert naturalist guides lead morning and afternoon game drives in custom open-sided 4x4 vehicles, sharing their deep knowledge of the local fauna and flora. For a truly memorable perspective, the camp offers hot-air balloon safaris at dawn. Guests can drift silently over the plains, witnessing the landscape come to life below, followed by a celebratory champagne breakfast upon landing. To deepen the cultural context of the safari, visits to a local Maasai community can also be arranged, offering respectful insight into their traditional way of life. Accommodation is provided in 37 classic safari tents, each positioned to offer privacy and uninterrupted views of either the Mara River or the sweeping plains. These spacious tents are appointed with comfortable furnishings and feature en-suite bathrooms with hot-water showers, blending rustic charm with essential comforts. Each tent includes a private veranda, an ideal spot for morning coffee or observing the resident warthogs and mongoose that frequent the camp grounds. In the evening, guests gather around the campfire for pre-dinner drinks before dining in the open-sided main tent, sharing stories of the day's adventures under the stars.
