About Elephant Watch Camp

Iconic owner-run camp in Samburu, deeply tied to elephant research.

Nestled in a grove of Kigelia trees on the banks of the Ewaso Ng’iro River, Elephant Watch Camp offers a safari experience rooted in conservation. Located within the rugged landscape of Kenya's Samburu National Reserve, this intimate camp provides an exceptional connection to the wild. Founded by the Douglas-Hamilton family, world-famous for their pioneering work with Save The Elephants, the camp’s ethos is built around a profound respect for wildlife. The experience is personal and immersive, designed for those who seek to understand nature on a deeper level. The safari focuses on Samburu’s famed elephant families, many of whom have been studied for decades. Guests are guided by local Samburu warriors, whose traditional knowledge and familiarity with individual elephants offer a unique perspective. Game drives venture into the reserve to witness these gentle giants alongside Samburu’s "Special 5": the Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, Beisa oryx, Somali ostrich, and the long-necked gerenuk. Encounters with resident predators, including lions, leopards, and cheetahs, are also a regular highlight in this diverse ecosystem. The camp itself is a model of sustainable luxury. Accommodation is in six spacious and brightly coloured eco-tents, designed to blend into the riverine forest. Each tent is built from natural, locally sourced materials, ensuring a minimal environmental footprint. The vibrant interiors feature colourful textiles and comfortable furnishings, creating an authentic bush home. Private verandahs overlook the river, and en-suite bathrooms are equipped with eco-toilets and classic safari-style bucket showers, filled with hot water on request. Evenings are relaxed and convivial. Talented chefs craft delicious meals from fresh, organic ingredients, often sourced from the camp's own garden. Dinners are enjoyed communally in the open-sided tent or beneath the stars, allowing for lively conversation with hosts and fellow guests. Gathering around the campfire for drinks and stories under the vast African sky is a quintessential part of the experience. A stay at Elephant Watch Camp is more than a safari; it is an immersion into a celebrated conservation legacy. It offers an authentic and educational connection to Africa’s most iconic species, guided by the people dedicated to their survival.
