About Aberdare Country Club
Heritage homestead on Mweiga Hill with rolling gardens, golf among warthog, horse rides and guided walks, a spa and pool, and easy access to Aberdare forests, waterfalls, and wildlife.
Set on the forested slopes of Mweiga Hill in the Aberdare Highlands, Aberdare Country Club blends the warmth of a historic homestead with the easy rhythm of a country retreat. Two and a half hours by road from Nairobi, it sits within flower-filled gardens and a private wildlife sanctuary, with views to the Aberdare range and, on clear mornings, Mount Kenya. The original farmhouse, once known as The Steep, anchors verandas, quiet lawns, and corners that invite guests to slow down and breathe the crisp highland air.
The surrounding Aberdare National Park is a distinctive landscape of misty montane forest, bamboo thickets, and open moorland cut by tumbling rivers and waterfalls. Guided game drives reveal forest elephants, Cape buffalo, bushbuck, black-and-white colobus, hyena, and, with luck, the elusive bongo and giant forest hog. Birders can look for Hartlaub’s turaco, montane eagles, and a wealth of sunbirds. Many itineraries combine a stay here with a night at sister property The Ark, where floodlit waterholes offer unrushed nocturnal wildlife viewing deep in the forest.
Back at the Club, days unfold at a relaxed pace. Guests can ride across the sanctuary, join guided nature walks, or play the nine-hole golf course, often shared with browsing warthog. The grounds are alive with plains game such as zebra, giraffe, and antelope, while the birdlife is rewarding. Between activities, the pool, spa, and tennis courts offer diversions, and sundowners are arranged at scenic viewpoints as the light softens across the hills.
Accommodation is in stone-and-timber cottages and suites scattered among the gardens, many with verandas and working fireplaces for the cool evenings. Interiors are comfortable and characterful rather than ostentatious, echoing the property’s heritage with polished wood, woven textures, and thoughtful touches for families and couples. The main house holds a convivial bar and dining rooms that open to terraces and lawns.
Dining focuses on fresh, seasonal produce from the Kenyan highlands, complemented by international favorites. Breakfasts can be on the terrace or taken as bush picnics before a day in the park; al fresco lunches and lantern-lit dinners round out the rhythm. Aberdare Country Club suits travelers seeking an unhurried base for exploring the Aberdares and linking to Mount Kenya, Ol Pejeta Conservancy, and the Laikipia Plateau.
