About Selous Impala Camp
Intimate owner-run tented camp on the Rufiji River inside Nyerere National Park.
Nestled along a wooded bend of the iconic Rufiji River, Selous Impala Camp offers an authentic safari experience in the vast wilderness of Nyerere National Park, one of Africa’s largest protected areas. This intimate, solar-powered camp combines simple elegance with a deep respect for the environment, providing a serene base from which to explore the untamed beauty of southern Tanzania. The camp’s prime location ensures a sense of seclusion and excellent access to the region’s diverse ecosystems, from riverine forests to open grasslands.
Accommodation is provided in just nine spacious, en-suite safari tents, ensuring a personal and exclusive atmosphere. Each tent rests on a raised wooden platform, complete with a private veranda offering tranquil views of the surrounding bush or river. Among these are two family units set on a shared deck, designed to comfortably host families with children. The style is classic and comfortable, focusing on immersing guests in the sights and sounds of the wild without sacrificing essential comforts. At night, the distant calls of wildlife serve as a natural soundtrack.
The diverse landscape of Nyerere National Park supports a remarkable concentration of wildlife. The Rufiji River is a lifeline, attracting large herds of elephants, pods of hippos, and formidable crocodiles that are often seen from the camp itself. Game drives reveal a wealth of species across the plains and through the woodlands. The park is also a celebrated birding destination, with over 400 resident and migrant species. Keen birders can spot specialities like the Ruvu Weaver and African Skimmer, with many species frequently seen within the camp grounds.
Expert local guides lead a range of activities designed to showcase the best of the park. Included in every stay are game drives in custom 4x4 vehicles and captivating boat safaris on the river, offering a unique perspective on aquatic life and animals gathering at the water's edge. For a more immersive adventure, guests can arrange for guided walking safaris to connect with the bush on foot, or specialized birding outings. For the truly adventurous, fly-camping excursions can also be arranged, providing an unforgettable night under the stars.
