About Rufiji River Camp

Foxes Safari Camps tented camp on the banks of the Great Rufiji River in Selous.

Nestled on the banks of the Great Rufiji River, Rufiji River Camp offers an authentic safari experience in the vast wilderness of Nyerere National Park. The camp is perfectly positioned where the rhythm of the river dictates the pace of life, providing front-row seats to the daily spectacle of wildlife drawn to its waters. Conveniently located near the Mtemere airstrip, the transition from flight to the heart of the bush is seamless, immediately immersing guests in this remarkable landscape. Spacious safari tents are thoughtfully positioned along the riverbank for privacy and exceptional views. Each rests under a permanent, high-thatched roof that extends to create a generous shaded veranda. Inside, guests find comfortable beds with mosquito netting and an en-suite bathroom with a shower. These private verandas serve as personal wildlife hides, ideal for observing passing elephants or listening to the distinctive calls of hippos echoing from the water below as the sun sets. The camp is a gateway to exploring Nyerere National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Rufiji River itself is a focal point for game viewing, supporting a thriving community of hippo and crocodile. The surrounding forests and woodlands are home to large herds of elephant and buffalo. Nyerere is a renowned stronghold for the endangered African wild dog, presenting a rare opportunity to witness these social predators. Excursions may also reveal lions, leopards, giraffes, and a remarkable diversity of the area's 440 recorded bird species. The experience is defined by varied safari activities. The camp’s signature boat safari glides along the Rufiji's channels for a unique, water-level perspective on wildlife. Game drives in open-sided 4x4 vehicles explore further into the reserve’s diverse landscapes. For a more intimate connection, guided walking safaris offer a chance to learn from experts about tracking, flora, and smaller inhabitants. In the evenings, guests gather in the central dining and lounge area, sharing stories while enjoying wholesome meals with uninterrupted river views.
