About Ruaha River Lodge

Foxes' Safari Camps' flagship lodge in Ruaha.

Nestled in Southern Tanzania, Ruaha River Lodge offers an authentic safari in the vast wilderness of Ruaha National Park. As a pioneering lodge, it commands a prime, secluded position on the banks of the Great Ruaha River. Its intentional remoteness is its greatest appeal, providing an unparalleled sense of exclusivity and the feeling of having this magnificent landscape to oneself. Here, the rhythms of the wild unfold undisturbed by the usual safari crowds, promising a deeply personal connection to nature. The lodge is set amidst a dramatic landscape of ancient baobabs and rocky kopjes. The river is a magnet for wildlife, especially during the dry season when game concentrates along its banks. Ruaha is celebrated for its significant lion populations and some of the largest elephant herds in East Africa, which are frequently seen from the lodge itself. This biodiversity hotspot is also home to leopard, wild dog, and a staggering array of over 570 bird species, making it a premier destination for both big game viewing and ornithology. Guest experiences center on exploration and immersion. Expert guides lead morning and afternoon game drives in open 4x4s, sharing their deep knowledge of the ecosystem while tracking the park’s diverse inhabitants. For a more intimate perspective, guided bush walks along the river reveal the smaller details of the ecosystem, from tracks and signs to unique flora. The safari day is punctuated by memorable moments, from a delicious bush breakfast served in a secluded location to classic sundowner cocktails enjoyed by the river as the sun sets. Accommodation is provided in spacious bandas built from local stone and thatch, positioned thoughtfully along the riverbank for privacy and optimal views. Each features a comfortable interior, an en-suite bathroom, and a large, shaded veranda that acts as a private wildlife viewing deck—a front-row seat to passing elephants and hippos. Two separate dining and lounge areas offer comfortable spaces to relax and share stories. The genuine wilderness feel is highlighted by Maasai guides escorting guests after dark, a constant reminder that you are a visitor in an untamed world.
