About Crater Forest Tented Camp

Sleep above the Ngorongoro forest in raised, fire-warmed tents on a highland coffee estate, where elephants roam below and sundowners, crater game drives, and village walks begin at your veranda.

Set on a highland coffee plantation at 1,800 meters on the edge of the Ngorongoro forest, Crater Forest Tented Camp offers a tranquil base in the Ngorongoro highlands of northern Tanzania. Reached by a short, adventurous 10‑kilometre track from the main road to the famous crater, the camp sits above rolling hills and neat arabica rows, with sweeping views across the treetops. From private verandas, guests often watch elephants meander through the forest below and listen to the chorus of turacos, nightjars, and distant lion calls as evening settles. The camp is intentionally small, with just 15 spacious, semi‑luxury tents set on elevated wooden platforms to maximise outlook and privacy. Each ensuite tent is thoughtfully equipped with mosquito nets and coils, candles and electric lighting, and an African‑style fire pot that keeps nights cosy during the cool highland winter. Large canvas windows draw in the forest light; outside, broad decks invite unhurried hours with a book, binoculars, or a sundowner delivered to the door at dusk. Meals are unhurried and seasonal. The restaurant serves a daily changing four‑course menu featuring fresh, locally grown produce, while the bar, lounge, and a separate games-and-reading nook offer relaxed spaces for coffee, tea, and digestifs. Morning tea or coffee can be served on the veranda, and lunch boxes are prepared for early starts. Charging points in the main areas and complimentary Wi‑Fi in the restaurant keep cameras, and guests, topped up before evenings by the campfire under the stars. Days here balance exploration and ease. Game drives into the Ngorongoro Crater reveal an exceptional density of wildlife, including the Big Five, hippo pools, cheetah, and grasslands alive with zebra and wildebeest. Tarangire National Park, famed for elephant herds and sculptural baobabs, also lies within day‑trip reach. Back at camp, guided walks with an armed ranger trace the forest edge toward the Ngorongoro gate, passing small villages and offering chances to see bushbuck, colobus, and signs of elephant. A coffee estate tour follows beans from shrub to steaming cup. Crater Forest Tented Camp suits travellers who value atmosphere, nature, and attentive simplicity. It places guests close to headline wildlife while delivering the slower rhythms of plantation and forest life, veranda breakfasts, cool nights by the fire pot, and unfiltered dawns over a sea of green.
